Russia-Ukraine Pact Set To Put The Ruslan Heavylifter Back In Production

The anticipated signing of a government-to-government deal between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Victor Yanukovich, is expected to kick-start a plan to resume production of Antonov’s An-124 Ruslan freighter. The text of the agreement has already been prepared, outlining the envisaged roles for aerospace interests in both countries, but government backing for the program needs to be confirmed, not least because Russia’s defense ministry would effectively be the launch customer under the provisional plan.
Russian vice-premier Dmitry Rogozin recently outlined plans for the country’s United Aircraft Corporation (Hall 1 Stand E8) to produce 60 new Ruslans by 2020 at its Aviastar-SP factory in Ulianovsk. The Russian government intends to seal its support for the revived program with a defense ministry order for 10 of the new-build aircraft and a commitment to pay for 22 in-service Ruslans to be overhauled and refitted. On top of this, commercial airlines Volga-Dnepr and Polet have indicated an intention to buy, respectively, 40 and six An-124s.
According to Volga-Dnepr vice-president Valery Gabriel, the airline is expected to award UAC a contract for 20 An-124s, provided Russia’s defense ministry places its order first. The $4 billion contract would have an option for 20 more Ruslans, with deliveries running through 2030.

Russian Air Force Confirms Plans to Buy An-70 Planes

An-70
“The Ukrainian side has promised to finish the remaining work on the [An-70] plane in the near future,” Bogdanov said at a news conference in RIA Novosti dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Russian Air Force.
“We will definitely buy it,” Bogdanov said, adding that the previous disagreements on the purchase had been caused by flaws in the design of the plane, which Ukraine promised to fix in line with Russia's requirements.
The Ukrainian-designed An-70, which is being built together with Russia, has had a long-running and troubled gestation, with one prototype crashing in the 1990's in a collision and a second crashing in 2001 in a take-off accident in Omsk. The aircraft also had a history of snags with its propfan engines.
Russia pulled out of the project in 2006, with Russia Air Force commander Vladimir Mikhailov stating it did not need the aircraft and would prefer the modernized Il-76, but it later rejoined the program.
The Russian military earlier announced plans to purchase at least 60 An-70s.
Bondarev also said on Wednesday that the Russian Air Force will receive at least 10 An-124 super heavy-lift transport planes by 2020.

KIEV (BNS): Ukrainian Navy's sole conventional submarine Zaporizhia has undergone a day-long sea trial in the Black Sea last week.

During the trial on June 12, the submarine's diesel engines were tested at full speed. Besides, the functioning of the vessel's electric motors, battery and the sonar system were also tested at maximum speed, a senior Navy official said.

The submarine later returned to Sevastopol, the Defence Ministry said.

The diesel-electric Zaporizhia, originally built for the erstwhile USSR Navy, is the only submarine of the Ukrainian Navy and was commissioned into service in 1997.

The vessel was later refurbished and entered the sea in April this year.

The 91.3m-long submarine, with a surface speed of 16.8 knots and a submerged speed of 16 knots, is expected to rejoin the Ukrainian Navy in near future.
